What is yogurt?
Yogurt (also spelled "yoghurt") is a dairy product that is produced by bacterial fermentation of milk, most commonly cow milk. Fermentation (the chemical conversion of organic compounds by enzymes) of the lactose (milk sugar) produces lactic acid. The reaction between the milk protein and the lactic acid gives the yogurt its unique texture and sour flavor. There is evidence of cultured milk products being used as human food for over 4,500 years, but although many countries claim yoghurt to be their own invention, there are no clear evidence of its native origin.
Why is yogurt good for me?
Yogurt is a valuable nutrition source for people of all ages. It is a balanced source of protein, minerals and carbohydrates, and is relatively low fat. It helps people with sensitive colons or with intestine problems, and is easier to digest than other dairy products.
Yogurt: A rich source of calcium
Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium for children, grownups and elderly. An 8-ounce serving of a standard yogurt provides your body with 450 mg. of calcium, a half of a child's RDA and 30% percent of the adult RDA for calcium. In addition, yoghurt has an extra advantage: The live-active cultures inside it improve the absorption of calcium, so more calcium stays in the body.
